By Request: Gopher vs. Sioux Hockey

Gopher_HockeyWe aim to please our fans here at BFMV and as requested by one of our faithful followers, we’ve done some speed reading and put our thoughts together on the big series between the Gophers and the Sioux this weekend. Keep in mind that although we have our PhD in football, we’re still undergraduates in Gopher hockey – but being a Minnesota sport we love it like the rest.

What we do know is the Gophers hockey team is coming off a long off-season that came on the heels of their first non-NCAA Tournament berth season since 2000. Historically a national contender – if not powerhouse – the Gophers skated a very young team with a heralded freshman class last year. With one year under their belt and another solid incoming class, the Gophers hope to be a tougher, more physical team this year.

According to GopherPuckLive.com both Coach Lucia and senior Ryan Flynn spoke at media day about the need to be a tougher team to play against and about having to win one-on-one battles, particularly in front of both nets. So look for that this weekend and throughout the year. Hopefully.

As former Wild coach Jacques Lemaire once (or many times) said “There’s no doubt. We have to battle. Battle hard at a time. Move our feet, skate. That’s hockey, eh?”

Gophers vs. Fighting Sioux
As Gopher fans remember, when two teams met in Grand Forks last year the result was disastrous for the Gophers. BFMV prediction –- if the Gophers man up and play Mike Tice-style “tough guy” hockey and exert their will against the younger Sioux like they did against us last year, the Gophers will come out of the weekend with three points – a tie tonight and a win tomorrow night.

Players to watch:

– Freshmen defenseman Seth Helgeson and Mr. Hockey Minnesota and future Minnesota Wild player Nick Leddy both make their collegiate debuts this weekend.
– Is goaltender Alex Kangas the answer is goal this year? Or will he continue to be the inconsistent net minder with “tons of potential”.

– Gopher Forward Jordan Schroeder - the guy is simply spectacular, he’s the hockey team’s Eric Decker (for you football fans). If he gets the first line to contribute 2-3 goals, Minnesota will win tonight.
– Sioux Forward David Toews – if the name looks familiar, it’s because his brother is the captain of the Chicago Blackhawks. If he has half the skill of his brother, Sioux fans are in for a treat.

Both games will air on Fox Sports North, with the Friday tilt starting at 7:30 p.m. and the Saturday rematch coming on the air at 7 p.m.
